Background

MongoDB originally used the GNU AGPLv3 for its open-source version. However, in October 2018, MongoDB introduced its own license, the Server Side Public License (SSPL). This change sparked significant discussion within the open-source community. It underscored the challenges that open-source companies face in the cloud computing era, where large providers can utilize and monetize open-source software without necessarily giving back. The licensing change aimed to restore balance, but it also initiated debates regarding the definition and future of open-source software.

Event Description

Five years after this pivotal decision, we aim to retrospectively assess its impact on the database landscape.

The “SSPL vs. Open Source” panel is a casual conversation, helping attendees understand the nuanced differences between the Server Side Public License (SSPL) and Open Source Software (OSS), thereby guiding their decision-making processes in software development and deployment. The conversation will touch on various aspects such as their underlying principles, benefits, criticisms, and potential implications for the future of the community.

We have invited well-known experts from both camps who will provide insights into the potential impact on developers, businesses, and the wider ecosystem. Peter Farkas as a moderator will be asking provocative questions. It will be intriguing to see which argument proves more compelling.
